Haven Yoga and Meditation explains how yoga fosters a real community at your local studio.
Yoga is most definitely an individual pursuit. The practise of yoga is a very personal thing, and although we do similar asanas or poses, each person’s journey to mind-body connection is ultimately unique.
Yet, even when practising alone, there’s a pervading sense of connection to a wider community, ultimately to universal love, as we are united by a shared love of yoga.
The power of connection.
The power of connection is most definitely felt in a group class, when your breath and movement become synchronised with those practising around you, creating a shared sense of peace and harmony.
A yoga community allows you, as a yogi, to feel more comfortable as you progress in your practice. It allows you to feel a sense of belonging, instead of just ‘taking another yoga class’. As you start to feel connected to your body, strength, mind, and breath, your connection to the other yogis you practice with builds over time.
The other benefits of regular yoga practice at a community-based studio include:
- Improve flexibility and strength. You are encouraged by those around you to build on what you learn each week
- Ease stress and anxiety levels, share in a common sense of peace and connection
- Make real friendships over time.
Whether we like it or not, we are hard-wired to crave and seek a sense of belonging.
This biological reassurance is the driving force behind the many roles and relationships in our lives, and the bonds we create with others undeniably accelerate growth and development.
In a post-pandemic world, where we heavily rely on digital platforms to build these bonds with our friends and family, joining your local yoga studio can help to foster in person relationships and a real community.
Community is about connection and unity.
Merge community with yoga and the power is amplified, allowing us to feel safe and supported in our soul’s journey, building strength in the mind-body connection and sending the power of collective positive energy out into the world.
Your yoga community is also part of a worldwide network of like-minded and beautiful beings, whose connection transcends imagined boundaries of race, religion, or nation.
This is one of the many incredible things about yoga; that is something so personal and yet can unite so many people.
